How We Test Running Shoes and Gear
Every recommendation on Enter2Run comes from running, not reading a spec sheet. Our Running Editor, Elena Marsh, puts each shoe and piece of gear through the same fixed protocol so that our verdicts are consistent and comparable from one review to the next. This page explains exactly what that protocol involves and how a recommendation is decided.
Step 1: Fit and sizing
Fit is where testing starts, because it is the single factor most likely to make or break a shoe for a given runner. For each pair we assess:
- Length and toe room against the labelled size, so we can flag shoes that run short, long, or true to size.
- Width and volume across the forefoot and midfoot, including how the shoe works for wider or higher-volume feet.
- Heel hold and lockdown, checking for slipping or pressure once the laces are set for a run.
- Late-run fit, because feet swell over distance. We note how the upper behaves after miles, not just in the first few steps.
Step 2: Mileage and wear testing
A shoe is judged over real, accumulating miles rather than a single outing. We run each pair across a graded range of efforts, from easy recovery runs to steady and tempo work, and track how it changes as the foam and upper break in. During this phase we watch for:
- How cushioning feels fresh versus after the midsole has been worked in.
- Outsole grip and rubber wear on the surfaces the shoe is meant for.
- Upper durability, including creasing, seam stress, and how the lockdown holds up over time.
- Any early breakdown, hot spots, or blisters that only appear over distance.
Because a recovery trainer, a race-day shoe, and a rugged trail shoe wear differently and are used differently, we test each over the mileage pattern that matches its purpose.
Step 3: Terrain and pace use-cases
We test gear at the paces and on the surfaces it was designed for, and we hold it to that standard. A daily trainer is judged on comfort and stability at easy and steady paces; a lightweight racer is judged on responsiveness and turnover at faster efforts; a trail shoe is judged on grip, protection, and stability on uneven ground. Judging a shoe outside its intended use would be unfair to it and unhelpful to you, so we always state the terrain and pace context behind a verdict.
Our criteria
Once a shoe or product has been through testing, we evaluate it against a consistent set of criteria:
- Fit accuracy: how closely real-world fit matches the labelled size and stated shape.
- Comfort: cushioning, ride, and freedom from irritation over distance.
- Performance for purpose: how well it does the job it is built for, at the right pace and terrain.
- Durability: how it holds up as miles accumulate.
- Value: what a runner gets relative to what similar shoes offer, independent of any commercial consideration.
How recommendations are decided
We do not crown a single universal “best” shoe, because the right shoe depends on the runner. Instead we assign each pick to a clear use-case, such as best daily trainer, best for wider feet, best for race day, or best for the trail. A shoe earns a place in a guide only after completing our protocol and proving itself for that specific role. Where a shoe falls short, we say so and explain who it is not for, so that a recommendation is as much about ruling options out as ruling them in.
Update policy
Running gear changes constantly. Models are revised year to year, sometimes with meaningful shifts in fit, cushioning, or weight, and shoes get discontinued. We review our guides on a regular cycle and whenever a shoe we recommend is updated or replaced. When a new version changes how a shoe performs, we retest it before keeping or changing our recommendation, and we note when a guide was last reviewed so you know how current it is.
