Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Chattanooga, Tennessee native Sam Powe has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Georgia’s class of 2026.
“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Georgia. I want to thank my coaches, family, and friends for all their support. I’m so grateful for this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to the next four years. Go Dawgs!🐶”
A senior at McCallie School, Powe is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and a three-time Tennessee high school individual state champion. At the 2021 TISCA Swimming and Diving Championships, he won the 200 free (1:38.03) and 100 back (47.17), breaking the championship record in the latter. He also led off the winning 200 medley relay (22.14) and the third-place 400 free relay (45.39), all of which helped McCallie finish second in the men’s meet.
Swimming with his club team McCallie / GPS Aquatics, Powe has been on a tear over the last year, dropping gobs of time in his best events. He came out of nowhere to rank #9 on our list of top-20 swimming recruits from the class of 2022, thanks to big improvements in his 100/200 backstrokes. In SCY, he went from 48.9 to 47.0 in the 100 back and 1:48.4 to 1:42.4 in the 200 back. Year-over-year, he also dropped 2 seconds in the 100 free, 2.4 seconds in the 200 free, 7.2 seconds in the 500 free, and .7 in the 50 back. Most of those time drops came at the NCSA Spring Championship, where he placed 2nd in the 200 back, 3rd in the 100 back, 4th in the 50 back, 10th in the 200 free, 12th in the 200 IM, and 25th in the 500 free.
This summer in LCM, he went best times in the 100/200 back (57.36/2:01.99) and 100/200 free (53.17/1:53.56) at Huntsville Futures Championships, finaling in all four events and picking up an Olympic Trials Wave I time in the 200 back.
200 back – 1:42.39
100 back – 47.07
50 back – 22.14
200 free – 1:37.76
100 free – 45.39
500 free – 4:29.49
200 IM – 1:51.49
Powe will join the Georgia class of 2026 with World Junior Record-holder Matt Sates, as well as Charlie Stout, Clayton Whetstine, Cooper Cook, Kristian Pitshugin, Sam Kohm, and Tyler Schroeder. His best backstroke times would have been right on the A/B-final bubble in both the 100/200 individual events at 2021 SEC Championships. He will overlap with UGA backstrokers Ian Grum, Zach Hils, Bradley Dunham, Charlie Logan, Sam Parker, and Mitchell Norton.
