YMCA Releases Time Standards for 2022 Short Course National Championships

The YMCA of the USA has released the time standards for the 2022 YMCA National Short Course Championship meet. About half of the times have remained the same, while times in 14 events have gotten faster from the last edition of the meet, which was held in 2019.

Most of the changes have come on the boys’ side of the pool, where 9 of the 14 event standards have changed.

The biggest single-event drop comes in the boys’ 800 free, which had a qualifying standard of 7:06.99 in 2019, but is now down to 7:04.09.

That’s in spite of the 800 free relay only having 44 entries in 2019 – substantially fewer than most relays. Those 44 entries did, however, take much longer, given the length of the relay.

Changes to standards (SCY):

Girls 200 free 1:55.69->1:55.39
Girls 100 back 59.29->59.09
Girls 200 back 2:07.49->2:07.29
Girls 100 fly 58.79->58.69
Girls 200 IM 2:10.19->2:09.79
Boys 200 free 1:45.39->1:45.19
Boys 100 back 53.99->53.89
Boys 100 breast 1:00.99->1:00.89
Boys 200 breast 2:12.99->2:12.69
Boys 100 fly 52.99->52.79
Boys 200 fly 1:58.19->1:57.79
Boys 200 IM 1:57.99-1:57.79
Boys 800 free relay 7:06.99->7:04.09
Boys 200 medley relay 1:39.99->1:39.79

Swimmers can qualify with swims in short course meters, short course yards, or long course meters pools.

The 2021 YMCA Short Course National Championships will be the first one since 2019. The 2020 and 2021 championships were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022 meet will be hosted in Greensboro, North Carolina from March 28 through April 1. At the 2019 meet, more than 1,400 swimmers competed. The Sarasota Family YMCA in Florida won the women’s title that year, while Somerset Hills YMCA in New Jersey won the boys’ title. Sarasota snagged the combined title.

Qualifying period: March 1, 2019 – entry deadline of the meet.
