2021 FINA WORLD CUP STOP #2 – BUDAPEST
Thursday, October 7th – Saturday, October 9th
Duna Arena, Budapest, Hungary
SCM (25m)
Results
The second stop of the 2021 FINA World Cup Series meant another opportunity for athletes to secure some prize money. As a reminder, FINA is giving out prize money to the top 20 men and women at each meet based on a point system that draws value from both a swimmer’s placement in the final and how many FINA points their swim is worth.
Only the swimmers’ top 3 events points-wise are worth anything for ranking purposes and the highest scoring swimmer is given $12,000, followed by $10,000 for second, and $8,000 for third.
In addition to those prizes at each meet, FINA will be awarding additional prize money at the end of the 4-stop series to the top 10 ranked swimmers including a grand prize of $100,000 to the women’s and men’s winners.
Emma McKeon had an impressive showing in Budapest, collecting gold in the 50 fly, 50 free, and 100 freestyle. Those 3 wins earned her a total of 58.3 points which is just 0.2 points more than fellow 3 event-winner Kira Toussaint. Toussaint won the backstroke triple which corresponded to 58.1 points overall for the 2nd place prize of $10,000.
Switzerland’s Maria Ugolkova raked in 56 points to pick up the 3rd place prize of $8,000 courtesy of her 100 IM and 200 IM wins and 2nd place finish in the 100 butterfly. Nika Godun of Russia and Australian Madi Wilson both cleared the 50-point mark for 4th and 5th place while Germany’s Isabel Gose came 6th with 49.6 points.

On the men’s side of the meet, Tom Sheilds had a stellar set of performances, first winning the 100 butterfly ahead of Olympic silver medalist and then pulling off a 50 fly/100 backstroke victory in the same session. Shields’ swim of the meet was certainly the 50 butterfly in which he took gold in a time of 21.99, taking out Caeleb Dressel’s former American record.
World junior record-breaker Matt Sates delivered an incredible 6 gold medal performances but as only the top 3 swims are considered for point rankings, he was just behind Shields’ points total of 58.1, collecting 57.5. After that duo, the Berlin meet high-scorer Arno Kamminga took third place and $8,000 after winning the 100 and 200 breaststrokes while getting out-touched in the 50 by Peter Stevens.
Kyle Chalmers and hometown swimmer Kristof Milak but up some decent efforts, each claiming event wins in Budapest, to place 4th and 5th overall in the meet rankings.

Budapest victor Emma McKeon and second-place finisher Matt Sates earned enough points at the second meet to secure the respective leads in the overall women’s and men’s rankings. They have now each collected a total of $22,000 in prize money and if they hold their lead over the next two meets, will earn the series prize of $100,000.
Note, however, that Matt Sates is still expected to race for Georgia in the NCAA later this year, meaning that he won’t be able to cash in the nearly $200,000 he will have accrued if he continues on this trajectory at the next 2 meets.
Check out the current overall rankings after the Berlin and Budapest stops, along with how much each of them has earned so far.
